Noriko Takamiya

Japan Born in: 1953

Despite her use of non-traditional basketry techniques, Takamiya still feels connected to ancient basketmakers. “I find myself in the same situation,” explains Takamiya. “Even if the resulting objects are different, the ancient basketmakers and I do the same thing, which is to seek the techniques and materials to develop into one’s own work.”

Selected collections and exhibition venues:
California Crafts Museum, San Francisco, California (Pacific Rim: Japan); University of Hawaii Art Gallery, Honolulu (International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition - 5th); Takashimaya, New York, New York, (Volume & Void); Craft Alliance, St. Louis, Missouri (New Baskets); Gallery Space 21, Tokyo, Japan (Fiber Art Part IV); Collins Gallery, Glasgow, UK (East Weaves West, Basketmakers from Japan and Britain, traveling exhibition); Cheongju, Korea (International Crafts Biennial); LongHouse Reserve, Easthampton, New York (Small Works in Fiber); Hiratsuka Art Museum, Japan (Baskets); Senbikiya Gallery, Meglo Ward Art Museum, Tokyo, Japan.
