Biography
Born in Nairobi in 1984, Michael Armitage is a British-Kenyan artist. He is known predominantly for his paintings which draw from global news media, internet gossip, and his personal experiences living between Kenya and the United Kingdom. He graduated from the Slade School of Fine Art in 2006, and from the Royal Academy Schools in London in 2010. In 2022, the UK's Royal Mint announced Armitage as the designer for the new £1 coin, which will be issued in 2023.
To date, the artist has showcased his work in a number of key exhibitions across the globe, including those at Sydney's Museum of Contemporary Art, the Venice Biennale, New York's Museum of Modern Art, and at Munich's Haus der Kunst.
