James Mutisya was born in 1971 in Kenya, where he also went to school and graduated from secondary school. He then attended an art school (Creative Art Centre) and obtained a diploma in interior design.
In 1975 he became a full-time artist after having worked in the visual arts with paintings, wood sculptures and linocuts.
James Mutisya has participated in many national and international exhibitions, e.g. at the Karen Blixen Museum in Nairobi and the National Museum, he has also had exhibitions in the USA, England and France.
