Description
The painting shows a Kilumi dance of the Kamba in Eastern Kenya. It was practised on religious or social occasions such as birth, death or marriage. The Kilumi dance is losing more and more importance among the population. Thus we see not only a beautiful linocut print, but also an image that is quite significant from an ethnological point of view, as it gives us a insight into the way of life of the East African population in times gone by.
Presentation
James Mutisya was born in 1971 in Kenya, where he also went to school and graduated from secondary school. He then attended an art school (Creative Art Centre) and obtained a diploma in interior design.
In 1975 he became a full-time artist after having worked in the visual arts with paintings, wood sculptures and linocuts.
James Mutisya has participated in many national and international exhibitions, e.g. at the Karen Blixen Museum in Nairobi and the National Museum, he has also had exhibitions in the USA, England and France.
