Joost Verhagen is a Dutch contemporary artist born in 1975, recognized for his paintings of contemporary landscapes where realism subtly mixes with abstraction. Based in Eindhoven, he develops a work inspired by industrial landscapes, urban spaces, infrastructures, and isolated places, which he transforms into compositions imbued with silence, mystery, and poetry. His work explores the way an ordinary landscape can evoke an emotional and contemplative experience.
Very young, Joost Verhagen became passionate about drawing, encouraged by a family composed of art teachers and designers. Fascinated by the port of Rotterdam, he created many drawings of urban landscapes and imaginary metropolises from childhood. After an initial professional orientation in real estate and several years spent working in the infrastructure of the Australian Outback, he decided to return to his artistic vocation. He joined the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, where he studied classical painting techniques before obtaining his degree in 2019.
Starting from photographs he creates himself, Joost Verhagen builds works that take realism as a starting point, before evolving it towards a more enigmatic and sometimes almost abstract vision. Working mainly in acrylic on canvas, with brush and knife, he places particular importance on composition, light contrasts, textures, and large formats. Influenced notably by Carla Klein, Koen van den Broek, Jan Ros, Erin McSavaney as well as by the cinematic photographs of Gregory Crewdson, he develops a personal aesthetic often described as "Modern Edward Hopper."
His works have been presented in numerous exhibitions in the Netherlands, Belgium, India, the United Kingdom, and Germany. He has notably participated in The Other Art Fair in London (2020), NOCKNOCK Art Fair in Amsterdam (2023), D-ARTS Expo in Antwerp (2019) as well as several personal and collective exhibitions. In 2021, he was named Artist of the Month by Online Gallery, recognizing the originality of his artistic approach.
Today, Joost Verhagen pursues a pictorial research focused on transforming the contemporary landscape into a space for contemplation. Between figurative painting, abstraction, architecture, industrial landscape, and contemporary realism, his work invites the viewer to rediscover familiar places from a new angle, where light, void, and color become the true subjects of the composition.
