Lynda Charles uses acrylic and charcoal to depict human dynamics that she believes are often deprived of the attention they need. She approaches her work as a Nigerian woman with a rapidly expanding worldview and understanding of the experiences that bind humanity.
Inspired by Frida Kahlo, Charles prioritizes the subjects and overall emotions she seeks to represent above all else. As a result, her body of work is mostly based on the relationships people have with themselves (their self-ideal, and how they want to be perceived) and others.
She is partial to portraying the female form either in solitude or in interaction with people and objects that have a profound impact on her worldview. Viewers are more likely to find her pieces portrayed at a life-sized scale as she believes that the smallest details, whether it's facial expressions or shades and hues, can render the most meaning.
Her art could be described as simulating a “through the looking glass" experience, with a strong pull on observers to take a second longer and ponder what they see. It is simply provocative, emotionally charged, and demands attention.
