Donna Sy

Donna de la Cuesta grew up in Greece, amidst the vibrant color of the Mediterranean. After graduating from Byron College in 2001, she moved to the Philippines to pursue a degree in Artchitecture at Mapua Institute of Technology. Her paintings were first exhibited at Hiraya Gallery in 2010. She considers herself a full time artist and a full time mother to young children. Sy painstakingly paints as a way to fit into her new environment. The culture shocks of her new experience has shown to her that for the most part, women in similar situations are branded as “just", “weak", “powerless", with no “right to speak". For her, she translates these personal and universal voicelessness into strong paintings of overcoming.
