Presentation

Ceramic Matters consists of two South African artists based in Wellington, outside of Cape Town. Gerhard Swart and Anthony Harris met at art school in Johannesburg and have worked, and lived, together for over forty years.

The particular exuberance that emerges from their works is limitless. Mixing techniques and moving between functionality and sculpture, their inspirations arise from confrontation and the look they bring from Africa onto the outside world. Nothing is smooth in their work, while clashing in a metaphorical and dreamlike aesthetic. Their unique style, which almost could have come from nowhere other than South Africa, produces works of assertive and even sometimes disturbing freedom.
