Decoding icons - painting the myths of modern culture
Alberto Ramirez LEG (b. Madrid, Spain) is a Berlin-based painter specialising in large-scale portrait work that sits at the intersection of fine art and popular culture. Drawing on a lifelong fascination with the human face as a carrier of meaning, Ramirez has spent his career decoding what he calls "a silent language that needs to be heard" — the unspoken stories written into the features of the figures who define our era.
His subjects are the cultural mythologies of the 21st century: musicians, athletes, actors and icons elevated to the status of modern gods. Works such as his portraits of Prince, Freddie Mercury, Bruce Springsteen and Johan Cruyff do not merely capture likeness — they interrogate the mechanisms of fame, identity and the shifting values of contemporary Western society.
The LEG project, born through a collaboration with childhood friend and fellow artist David Partida, expanded Ramirez's practice and brought his work to international attention. He has exhibited across Europe, China and Latin America, with solo shows at institutions including Moderna Museet Malmö, 1503 Museum of Art Beijing and repeated exhibitions at Galleri Scandinavia in Gothenburg and Stockholm.
Ramirez's paintings hold a rare double appeal: intellectually grounded in questions of anonymity and cultural mythology, yet immediately accessible through their iconic subjects. His work is collected internationally and continues to be shown at leading galleries and art fairs.
