Biography

Aloïse Corbaz (1886–1964) was a Swiss artist known for her significant contributions to Art Brut. Born in Lausanne, she experienced a turbulent childhood, marked by the loss of her mother and a series of emotional struggles. After attempting to pursue a career as a singer, she worked in various roles before being hospitalized for mental health issues. Corbaz spent the later years of her life in psychiatric institutions, where she began creating art using materials like pencils, colored crayons, and gouache.

Corbaz's work is characterized by vivid, detailed drawings and paintings often involving love, theater, opera, and religious themes. She frequently depicted historical or fictional characters with exaggerated blue eyes and created expansive compositions by stitching together paper sheets. Her works blend symbolism with personal narratives, reflecting her emotional and spiritual struggles. The artist also incorporated collage elements from magazines and newspapers into her creations.

Her artwork was first recognized by Jean Dubuffet, a key figure in the Art Brut movement, who included her work in his collection. Corbaz's pieces have been displayed in major institutions such as the Collection de l'Art Brut in Lausanne and the Kunstmuseum in Solothurn. Her legacy continues to grow, with retrospectives such as the 2012 exhibition "Aloïse. Le ricochet solaire" solidifying her place as a major figure in outsider art.
