Somsak Hanumas is a contemporary Thai painter born in Bangkok in 1980. Growing up surrounded by the lush nature of northern Thailand, he developed an early artistic sensibility nurtured by tropical landscapes and Buddhist culture. Initially destined for a career in engineering after studying at the King Mongkut's Institute of Technology in Ladkrabang, he abandoned this path to dedicate himself entirely to painting.
A self-taught artist in his early days, he gradually perfected a highly recognizable technique based on the repetition of colored dots and superimposed lines, creating complex abstract compositions. His process begins with a painted background, onto which he meticulously applies thousands of dots and then fine lines, forming works akin to lyrical abstraction and contemporary pointillism. Each canvas can require between 8 and 12 weeks of work, reflecting a meditative approach centered on patience and time.
His work explores the relationship between nature, memory, and spirituality, often inspired by Thai landscapes such as beaches, jungles, and monsoon fields. He is represented by several international galleries and has exhibited at major events, including the Venice Biennale (2022). His works are featured in prestigious collections such as the Bernard Magrez Foundation, the Mikati Collection, and spaces within the LVMH group.
Somsak Hanumas's work falls within the realm of contemporary abstract art, blending Eastern and Western influences and developing a unique visual language based on repetition, color, and contemplation.
