Hugo Brun

In 2019, Hugo Brun founded his own contemporary furniture house and immediately stated an ambition: to create pieces that resemble nothing known. Vivid colors, geometric shapes, sometimes exaggerated proportions, and unexpected materials make up a universe where the line between functional object and sculptural work is deliberately blurred.

Contrary to the idea that an object should discreetly blend into its decor, Hugo Brun designs pieces made to attract the eye, disrupt visual comfort, and provoke conversation. Under his approach, an interior becomes an expressive environment, where art and design become a true experience.

His entire work is based on the meeting of opposite worlds: nature and the urban universe, ancient and contemporary, integrity and fragmentation. He thus unites ancient Egypt and the Memphis movement of the 1980s in , or disturbs the classical ideal of the antique Venus with graphic motifs in . With , colorful pills invade the blue and white decor of a vase inspired by the Ming dynasty.

Street art holds a central place in his imagination. It pays homage to the unfinished towers of Los Angeles covered in graffiti, while and are born from the memory of an abandoned water park where the artist once entered, a forgotten place reinvested by graffiti artists.

Hugo Brun has given birth to a whole world of recurring characters. Mrs Kloud, whose face is a cloud in perpetual transformation, embodies a contemporary identity saturated with images and information. Her companion Mr Thunder, with a lightning bolt head, symbolizes impulse and energy. Romulus, a traveler crowned like an emperor and masked like a rebel, oscillates between the ancient world and urban culture, while Aiko pays homage to manga and Japanese animation.

In painting, the artist develops several series: graffiti and Pop Art interventions on covers of famous tabloids, the series which associates illogical images, or still the series , which twists color palettes by assigning intimate and humorous descriptions to them.

In Hugo Brun's work, humor often serves to question our time. , a giant and deliberately absurd pill, questions the ideal size of a dose of happiness. , an oversized balloon struck by the word EGO, mocks vanity, and freezes watches and bills in a block evoking ice to question our relationship with luxury and desire.

For the artist, art remains above all open to interpretation: it seeks to evoke an emotion and leave everyone free of their perception, rather than to impose a meaning.
