Erdal Alantar was born in 1932 in Istanbul. He then studied Fine Arts there between 1949 and 1956. In 1958, he graduated from Fine Arts in Florence and Rome. In 1959, he moved to Paris with his wife, Sevinç, a pianist. He continues to exhibit in Turkey where he remains one of the pioneers of abstraction, very inspired both by Ottoman calligraphy and by romantic music. Away from fashions, he has created a style that he calls "gestural expressionist romanticism". Like Zao Wou-Ki, he knew how to combine the richness of his personal culture with the development of a free and exceptionally creative thought. His works set new milestones in the history of the School of Paris.
