Biography
Eliot Porter was an American visual artist, remembered today for his color photographs of natural subjects. The artist was born in 1901 in the United States, and from a young age developed a passion for both the outdoors, and nature photography. Upon the artist’s introduction to gallerist Alfred Stieglitz, Porter’s photography was exhibited in New York City in 1938, which compelled him to pursue his art full-time.
Having made a pioneering transition from black and white to color photography, Porter produced several photography books which focused on subjects in nature. His work earned him an election as Fellow at the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1971. After a life of extensive travel, exploring and photography, Eliot Porter died in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1990.
