Jerry Uelsmann was an American photographer. Born in Detroit in 1934, he received his MFA from the University of Indiana in 1960.
Known for his post-visualization approach and photomontage techniques, Uelsmann drew inspiration from the Surrealists. He constructed his images in the darkroom, utilizing analog techniques to create images which challenge reality.
Uelsmann received numerous awards for his photography, including a Royal Photographic Society Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship. His photographs can be found in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum, London; the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Art Institute of Chicago.
