Saul Leiter was an American photographer and painter. Alongside other contemporary photographers, including Diane Arbus and Jane Livingstone, Leiter became part of what was retrospectively known as the “New York school of photographers".
Born in 1923, the camera Leiter received for his 12th birthday for his mother would be the catalyst behind a highly successful career. A self-taught photographer, Leiter pioneered a unique approach to capturing images. His decision in the 1940s to switch from black-and-white to color photography marked him as unconventional compared to other art photographers of his time. As a fashion photographer, Leiter's works were published in Vogue, Elle, and Harper's Bazaar.
Leiter has been the subject of two documentaries and a book. He died in 2013. The Saul Leiter Foundation in New York preserves his artistic legacy.
