Biography
Michael Rider (they/them) is a singer-songwriter and artist from New York City. Predominantly known as a musician, having released four studio albums, most recently 2022's “Cycle" being nominated for Wavy's album of the year and signed under Grimalkin Records, Michael also is an accomplished visual artist. Born in Richmond, Virginia, Michael broke their teeth as a student of Henrico High School's Center for the Arts (CFA) where they were taught by Mary Scurlock. Michael then migrated to NYC as a Silas Rhodes scholarship recipient to the School of Visual Arts in 2013.
Inspired by a lineage of abstract painters like Cecily Brown, Susan Rothenberg, Cy Twombly, and Richard Diebenkorn, Michael's visual art is a mix of styles that nevertheless carry a timeless quality. Rider has exhibited in NYC's Flomenhaft Gallery, Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, as well as the Miami Art Museum as a YoungArts finalist in 2012.
