Anthony Barboza is a photographer born in 1944 in the state of Massachusetts.

From a young age, Anthony was fascinated by photography and at the age of nineteen he sets out to live in New York. There, he meets a famous photographer named Hugh Bell who became his mentor and taught him all the tricks of the trade tha comes with being a fashion photographer.

After having worked a few years as a photographer for the Navy, Barboza finally decided to settle in New York for good and sets up his own studio. Even though he quickly becomes quite successful, he realizes he’s too often confronted by racial segregation because of his origins. At the time, there weren’t many African-American photographers.

Passionate about music, jazz and poetry, Barboza displays his influences in every single one of his photographs. In the 70’s, he tended to focus solely on portraits, starting with his own acquaintances and quickly following up with portraits of celebrities, intellectuals and athletes of New York at the time.

Today, Barboza’s work is widely recognized amidst the photography world. His creations are display at various exhibitions, including at the New York’s famous MoMA.
