Description
A quiet blue mermaid wraps around the body of this bone china vase, surrounded by an imagined marsh of leaves, curling stems, seed pods, and water-lily forms. The figure is painted in muted blue-gray tones, with carefully described scales and soft tonal transitions that give her a melancholic, almost dreamlike presence.
The composition continues around the entire vessel. On the reverse, the mermaid gives way to richly detailed vegetation rendered in warm brown and liquid gold against a pale sky-blue ground. The long stems and ornamental botanical silhouettes introduce an Art Nouveau quality, while the reflective gold adds warmth and changes subtly as light moves across the curved surface.
The contrast between figurative modeling and graphic plant forms gives the work much of its character. One side feels intimate and contemplative; the other becomes dense, decorative, and botanical. Because every angle reveals a different relationship between figure, water, and vegetation, the piece rewards viewing in the round.
For collectors interested in contemporary ceramics, mythological imagery, and decorative art with a strong narrative presence, this work offers both fine detail and an unusual visual identity. Displayed on a console, pedestal, cabinet, or open shelf, it can become a distinctive focal object within a contemporary or eclectic interior.
Materials: Overglaze paints, 12% liquid gold solution, bone china.
Shipping / Display: The artwork is shipped in a protective box.
Colors & Shades
Sky blue, powder blue, pale aqua, icy blue, blue-gray, slate blue, muted indigo, soft white, ivory, bronze gold, antique gold, warm brown, sepia brown, dark umber, charcoal, muted olive-brown.
This artwork is especially suited to collectors of contemporary ceramics, figurative decorative art, mythological imagery, mermaid art, and objects influenced by Art Nouveau botanical design. It will appeal to someone who prefers unusual narrative pieces with fine craftsmanship and enjoys artworks that reveal different details as they are viewed from multiple sides. Its combination of melancholy, sensuality, marsh vegetation, and gold detailing also makes it a distinctive choice for a collector who wants something more personal than conventional decorative porcelain.
Presentation
Oxana Kondratenko was born on November 26, 1972, in Klaipeda, Lithuania.
With a strong academic background and two higher education degrees, she made a conscious transition into the field of art, following her primary vocation—painting. She focused on one of the most demanding mediums: artistic porcelain.
In 2018, Oxana graduated from the College of Traditional Culture. In 2019, she further developed her professional expertise at the renowned Stieglitz State Academy of Art and Design in St. Petersburg, mastering the rare and highly skilled profession of porcelain painting artist.
She achieved a high level of mastery and recognition within the professional art community.
Oxana has held several solo exhibitions, including at the Hermitage–Vyborg Exhibition Center in Vyborg, and has participated in numerous international group exhibitions.
A key indicator of her success is the inclusion of her works in state museum collections.
Her works are held in the following collections:
2023, September 4 — State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg
2022, December 19 — Hermitage-Vyborg Exhibition Center, Vyborg
2022, May 13 — Keramarch Museum of Architectural Ceramics, State Bastion of the Peter and Paul Fortress, St. Petersburg
Currently, Oxana is working on her flagship series “Swamp"—a large-scale collection of interior vases in overglaze painting on bone china.
The central motif of the series is the “Swamp Mermaids," who draw the viewer in, leading them into their watery embrace. This is not merely a fairy-tale narrative, but a sensual exploration of human psychology. It represents a conscious confrontation with the fear of the unknown—a bold invitation to look into the deepest hidden realms, where invisible life resides. In this space, the artist discovers fragile beauty and mystery.
Enchanting mermaid figures, born from the collaboration of porcelain, fire, and gold, become guides into a world where fear transforms into beauty, and mystical fog becomes pure art.
