Description
This artwork is a striking exploration of emotional expression through abstract and figurative elements. Dominating the composition is a large, red oval sketched with dynamic, energetic strokes, which frames the central focal point of the piece. Inside this frame, an assemblage of simplistic, cartoon-like faces peer towards the center, each exhibiting a range of emotions from joy to anger. The characters are deliberately drawn in a naive, childlike style, adding layers of raw authenticity and spontaneity. The upper half of the image is particularly engaging, as the faces appear to be both watching and participating in an unseen event, suggested by the subtle contour lines forming a vague landscape or setting. The use of black ink for the figures contrasts sharply with the bold red of the frame, creating a sense of tension and drawing the viewer's eye into the complex interactions among the characters. A captivating aspect of this piece is its dual nature. The minimalistic approach coupled with the vivid color choice challenges the viewer to consider what lies beyond the immediate visual appeal—perhaps a commentary on the collective human experience, where individual emotions coexist within a larger societal framework. The artwork's simplicity is deceptive, inviting the observer to project personal interpretations and emotions onto the scene. This juxtaposition of simplicity and emotional depth makes the artwork not only visually arresting but also intellectually stimulating.
Presentation
My name is Michael R. Grine and I am an process oriented artist. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas.
Statement
Curiosity. Emotion. Experimentation. Exploration. Leap of faith. Pursuit of knowledge. These words only begin to describe what my art signifies or represents. I was born an artist and have always identified myself as an artist. I possess an insatiable creative drive to make art out of the images I see in my mind. To help satisfy this impulse, I am always exploring new places and trying new things. Having freedom of expression and not being limited to one style or technique of making art are paramount to my identity as an artist. I love the many different processes of making art and experimenting with new ways of creating art.
My inspiration stems from color, music, literature, and the excitement about the unknown possibilities of taking everyday objects and using them in a way that differs from what the manufacturer intended. I use a combination of found objects, acrylic paints, and aerosol paints to create abstract patterns on wood and canvas. Some of my methods include combining different chemicals and paint on paper or in plastic or wood box frames to distort vivid colors that are mixed or thrown right on the canvas. The result is the distortion of lines and contours, and layers of translucent or opaque paints on the canvas or in random patterns.
