Dale Chihuly's "Japan Drawing 90/1457" (1990) is an original charcoal on paper that offers a rare and intimate glimpse into the artist's creative process. Rendered entirely in black and white, the work emphasizes Chihuly's mastery of line, form, and gesture, revealing the foundational stage of his visionary designs. Charcoal, with its capacity for bold contrast and nuanced shading, allows the dynamic energy of Chihuly's compositions to emerge, capturing the immediacy and fluidity of his hand as he explores shapes, spatial relationships, and the interplay of light and shadow.

This drawing is part of Chihuly's broader practice of studio experimentation, where sketches and concept drawings play a central role in developing the large-scale glass installations and sculptures for which he is internationally celebrated. "Japan Drawing 90/1457" reflects the origins of his design process, illustrating how Chihuly translates initial ideas on paper into complex, luminous glass forms. The monochromatic medium directs focus to structural elements, emphasizing the artist's compositional precision and intuitive sense of movement.

Provenance is a significant aspect of this work, as it was purchased directly from the Halcyon Gallery in London, a renowned institution representing Chihuly's oeuvre and ensuring its authenticity and careful stewardship. Signed by the artist on the lower front, the piece includes a gallery certificate of authenticity, further corroborating its origin and significance.

Measuring 30.25" × 22.5" (sheet), "Japan Drawing 90/1457" stands as a testament to Chihuly's artistic process, offering collectors and admirers an intimate connection to the moment where his drawings evolved into the vibrant glass masterpieces that define his career.

Presentation

DALE CHIHULY (1941-  ) Dale Chihuly has almost single-handedly turned the craft of glass-blowing into an art form in America, moving far beyond the common vision of glass to create glass sculpture in a multitude of forms, colors, and sizes. The artist is known for his series of sculptural glass works and paintings, and perhaps best recognized for his huge installations of organically shaped Chandeliers, some weighing up to almost a ton.
