Description

Original preparatory drawing for a screenprint. The drawing is made on transparent tracing paper, and presented together with the corresponding original colour screenprint, which is mounted beneath the drawing.

The drawing is signed and dated in pencil lower right by the artist.

The underlying screenprint is signed, dated and numbered by the artist.

These inscriptions are concealed beneath the passe-partout to preserve the visual integrity of the presentation. As a result, the work is signed twice, although the second signature is intentionally hidden within the framing.

Literature: Cory 44.1 – 44.4

The work is professionally framed, mounted in a custom-made double acid-free passe-partout, in a handcrafted wooden frame with Plexiglas® Optical HC (UV protection, scratch-resistant, minimal reflection).

Framed size: approx. 80 x 70 cm

Verena Loewensberg (1912–1986) is regarded as one of the most important pioneers of Swiss Concrete Art. Closely associated with artists such as Max Bill, Camille Graeser and Richard Paul Lohse, she developed a distinctive visual language based on geometry, rhythm and carefully balanced colour relationships. While rooted in strict constructive principles, her compositions possess an exceptional sense of harmony, lightness and visual movement.

Today, her works are represented in leading museum collections, including the Kunsthaus Zürich, Museum Haus Konstruktiv, Kunstmuseum Winterthur and numerous international public and private collections.

Presentation

Verena Loewensberg (born in 1912) was a Swiss painter and graphic designer. Loewensberg was the oldest daughter of a family of doctors in Zurich. After two years at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel in 1927, she became a textile weaver in Speicher, Switzerland. In 1936 she began her career as an artist and helped in 1937 with the founding of an association of modern artists in Zurich. She participated in many successful group exhibitions. Her work which focuses on lineality and color was inspired by the work of Georges Vantongerloo and Piet Mondrian. The painter passed away in 1986.
