Description
This ink drawing unfolds in a sharp contrast. The black and white line emphasizes a stripped-down figurative composition.
Three human silhouettes emerge from a flowered ground. Their bodies merge with nature. Stems shoot up from their torsos to blossom beneath their faces.
The artist explores here the themes of survival and resilience. The image evokes the cycle of life in the face of violence and uprooting. The figures seem suspended between fragility and strength.
The dark background accentuates the relief of the white bodies. The gaze is directed upwards, suggesting a form of hope despite the rigor of the line. This creation is part of a precise political and historical approach.
The graphic work relies on an economy of means to maximize visual impact. Each line defines a tension between oppression and rebirth. The work uses fine ink on paper to account for the Palestinian experience. The flowers that crown the scene bring a note of organic softness to the whole.
Presentation
Maisara Baroud is a Palestinian visual artist born in Gaza in 1976. He holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts from An Najah National University in Nablus and a Master of Fine Arts from the College of Fine Arts in Zamalek, Cairo. He has also taught at the College of Fine Arts at Al Aqsa University in Gaza.
Working primarily through a stark black and white visual language, Baroud explores war, displacement, political imprisonment, and illegal detention, with a particular focus on the Palestinian experience. His work reflects on lives shaped by recurring cycles of violence, loss, survival, and resilience.
Baroud has exhibited extensively in Palestine and internationally, and has presented six solo exhibitions, including Rubble (2021), Existence (2021), and salt Boats (2019).
