Description
This charcoal drawing questions the mutations of the Palestinian landscape. The composition focuses on a simple gesture. Two hands carefully grasp a cylindrical object. This volume evokes a manufactured product, a box whose graphic design suggests an idealized vision of housing. A small tree and a house are sketched in it.
The contrast between the deep black of the background and the whiteness of the paper emphasizes the tension of the subject. The line is precise, almost architectural. The rendering of the charcoal brings a raw and immediate dimension to the scene. The artist uses a conceptual language here to address historical and political themes.
The object held seems to have become a relic or a conditioned hope. The tight framing accentuates the intimacy of the moment and the fragility of what it protects. This black and white study, made in 2013, plays on the symbolism of possession and belonging. The gaze fixes on the detail of the fingers and the grainy texture of the material.
Presentation
Amer Shomali is a Palestinian multidisciplinary artist born in Kuwait in 1981 and currently based in Ramallah. Working across painting, film, digital media, installation, and comics, his practice explores Palestine's sociopolitical landscape, with a particular interest in the creation and use of the iconography of the Palestinian revolution.
Shomali holds a BSc in Architecture from Birzeit University and a Master's degree in Animation from Bournemouth University. He co-directed the award-winning animated documentary The Wanted 18 , which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2014 and received awards at several international film festivals. The film was also included in the official submission lists for the 88th Academy Awards.
His work is held in collections including the British Museum, Arab World Institute, Barjeel Art Foundation, Birzeit University Museum, and Al-Qattan Foundation. Shomali currently teaches at the Faculty of Art, Music and Design at Birzeit University.
