Julio Le Parc, born in Argentina in 1928, arrived in France in 1958 after receiving a study grant. He settled in Paris, where he still lives today. Influenced by artists he met upon his arrival, he quickly moved away from figurative painting to focus on geometric abstraction and the creation of perceptual sculptures. Movement, light, and color became the fundamental elements of his research.

In the early 1960s, he co-founded the G.R.A.V. (Groupe de Recherche d’Art Visuel) with François Morellet, Francisco Sobrino, Horacio Garcia Rossi, and Yvaral. This was a period of exchange and intense experimentation during which “kinetic art” emerged. For the group, the viewer was not to be considered a passive element receiving artworks as creations of the all-powerful artist, but rather as someone who should actively interact with them.

Julio Le Parc’s first solo exhibition was held in 1966 in New York, and that same year he won the Grand Prize for Painting at the Venice Biennale. He then became one of the pillars of Galerie Denise René.

His involvement in the 1968 uprisings and his active participation in the for the creation of protest posters led to his expulsion from France. A support committee formed by fellow artists and intellectuals enabled his return a few months later. He found success abroad until his participation in the exhibition at the Centre Pompidou-Metz in 2011, and even more so with the major retrospective dedicated to him by the Palais de Tokyo in 2013.

Presentation

Born in 1928 in Mendoza, Argentina, Julio Le Parc has lived and worked in Paris since 1958. A major artist crowned with the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1966, Julio Le Parc occupies a unique place on the contemporary art scene as as a precursor of kinetic art .

In 2025, Julio Le Parc, a pioneer of kinetic art, is once again in the spotlight on the international art scene. Born in 1928 in Mendoza, Argentina, and based in Paris since 1958, the artist has continually pushed the boundaries of visual perception and artistic experimentation.

This year, his luminous and immersive artworks are on display in several major European galleries, including in Madrid and Paris, reaffirming his lasting influence on contemporary art. Nearly 60 years after winning the Grand Prize at the Venice Biennale in 1966, Julio Le Parc continues to captivate new generations with his radical approach to movement, light, and spatial interaction.
