Description

John Kenny met this young Fula girl as she was walking across the barren, sandy monotones of Niger’s Sahel. She was wearing an amazingly intricate arrangement of beads and a carefully crafted hat.

The intricate jewellery and vibrant facial make-up represent both the Fula culture, of which she belonged, and the dominant Hausa people of southern Niger amongst who she lived.

The Fulani (also known as Fula, Fulbe, Peul) are the largest nomadic group in the world and are found across thousands of kilometres of West Africa, spanning from Senegal in the far west to Chad in the far east.

The Fulani were the first group of people in West Africa to convert to Islam.

This striking black-and-white portrait shows the intricate traditional attire of the Hausa and Fula communities.  John's subject exudes a powerful presence in her dess which has a tapestry of patterns and textures, rich with cultural significance. Her headdress is elaborately decorated with shells, adding depth to the composition. Intricate beaded jewelry cascades down the neck and chest, reflecting meticulous craftsmanship.

Facial markings enhance the intensity of the expression and reveal her cultural affiliations. The high contrast and detailed focus create a timeless and evocative portrait, capturing not just an image but the essence of a heritage. The black backdrop amplifies the subject's prominence, isolating them in a moment of dignified stillness. This photograph serves as a poignant exploration of identity and tradition, inviting viewers to appreciate its visual and cultural richness.

John Kenny's portraits from the remotest corners of Africa capture the pride and traditions of diverse and rich cultures.

Acrylic face mount with a UV plexiglass. Also available in larger sizes.

Presentation

John Kenny is a self-taught photographer who fell in love with this art in 2003. John Kenny's stunning portraits from Africa document a series of tribal societies justly proud of their traditions and cultural heritage. As the continent becomes increasingly urbanized and environmental pressures grow on peoples living at the peripheries of the modern world such images have become precious, rare insights.

John Kenny has photographed in regions that stretch from the southern valleys of Ethiopia and harsh desert of northern Kenya, across to the arid hinterlands of West Africa, and beyond to the southern desert regions of Namibia and Angola. Faces emerge from the shadows illuminated by a soft and diffuse natural light.

“Lines that lead to perfection” was auctioned at Sotheby’s in New York in November 2011. A book of his images “Facing Africa / L’Afrique en face” was published in 2013.
