Description
This captivating portrait exudes an intensity that immediately captures the eye and imagination. At the center of the work, a male face emerges from a tangle of dynamic brushstrokes and vibrant colors. The man’s features, seen in profile, are rendered with a raw spontaneity that defies traditional conventions of realism. The color palette is bold, including touches of bright yellow, deep red, and effervescent green that punctuate the canvas’s predominantly light background. These bursts of color create a visual tension that seems to bring the subject to life, instilling a sense of movement and contained emotion. The treatment of the material is particularly remarkable: the paint is applied in thick, gestural layers, which add a rich texture to the work’s surface. The spontaneous, almost aggressive marks around the face lend an electric energy to the composition, as if the artist were engaged in a frenetic dance with the canvas. Presentation
In the early 1990s, Jean-Michel Lourenço performed alongside rock bands: during their set, he painted on stretched canvases in a figurative style inspired by H.R. GIGER.
Himself a guitarist in several punk-rock groups for nearly 20 years, Jean-Michel Lourenço has always drawn his inspiration from music.
After a stint at the Beaux Arts in BESANCON, where he learned the different techniques of engraving, he began to paint canvases inspired by jazz and cinema.
He makes portraits in oil, stencil and also mixes the two techniques.
In a more Pop Art style, he creates canvases using torn posters.
Jean-Michel Lourenço also produced several frescoes adorning buildings in the town of VESOUL.
