Description

Kat 66

The Oil painting Canvas titled "Hybrid war" is a striking visual allegory that captures the fragile, volatile, and often contradictory nature of adolescence in today's world. At the center of the composition, a teenager is depicted from behind, suspended on a swing. The figure, dressed in a casual green shirt and shorts, leans forward with intensity, gripping the chains tightly as the swing arcs through space. The body language conveys a mix of determination, tension, and unease, as though the act of swinging is not one of carefree childhood joy but instead a confrontation with unseen forces. The chains of the swing, however, are not attached to a tree branch or a playground structure. Instead, they are connected to two ominous, spiked naval mines—objects of destruction and danger, coldly mechanical in form. Their heavy, menacing presence looms above the teenager, replacing the innocence of childhood play with the weight of violence and existential threat. The substitution of playful anchors with instruments of war radically alters the emotional register of the piece, transforming a simple image of a swing into a metaphor for growing up in a world where danger is inescapably overhead. The muted gray background enhances this unsettling mood. Empty and devoid of context, it strips away any sense of place or comfort, placing full focus on the relationship between the adolescent figure and the deadly objects suspending them. The starkness of the background may symbolize the void of certainty that modern youth face—a life stage defined by ambiguity, pressure, and vulnerability. The flat neutrality of the setting amplifies the surreal absurdity of the swing's construction, forcing viewers to dwell on the uneasy juxtaposition of innocence and peril. Emotionally, the canvas resonates with the inner struggles of teenagers navigating contemporary life. The swing, traditionally a symbol of childhood freedom and lighthearted joy, here embodies the precariousness of modern adolescence—an experience suspended between the remnants of childhood and the looming threats of adulthood. The mines symbolize the emotional burdens, societal pressures, and anxieties that weigh heavily on young people today: fear of conflict, environmental crises, political instability, mental health struggles, and the dissonance of growing up in a rapidly changing, often hostile world.

Presentation

Oleg Kateryniuk was born in 1969 in Ukraine.. has made a successful career as a graphic designer.. But, over the years we become more sensitive to people, to nature, to the environment, to everything around us. So something happened, noticed, interested you and sits in you, with its emotions, feelings, its truth and philosophy.. no-no, it does not bother you, just sometimes, as if talking to you, tells your story, pulls your strings souls, and are forced to flee in search of something new, still unnoticed, and very, as it seems at this time, so necessary.. and not only you.. And in such moments you take a pencil, brushes and everything at hand.. and you draw.. being left alone with canvas or paper and your thoughts..
