Description

Alex Claude "Landscape as a source of sensation"

Between abstraction and reminiscence, Alex Claude paints imaginary landscapes that disturb as much as they soothe. Each canvas is a sensory journey: drips, erasures, rubbings, and transparencies are layered with rare gestural mastery.

A graduate of the Beaux-Arts de Paris with highest honors, he developed a pictorial language where the eye loses its bearings but never its emotion. Without preparatory drawings, he instinctively composes suspended spaces and distant horizons, like so many echoes of an inner world.

Represented in the collections of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF) and museums in France and internationally, Alex Claude exhibits regularly in galleries, art fairs, and institutions. His work, recognized for its atmospheric depth, appeals to collectors and lovers of contemporary painting.

Presentation

Alex Claude (b. 1971) is a French contemporary painter known for his imaginary abstract landscapes created with acrylics. A graduate of the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1997 with highest honors, he quickly distinguished himself with a unique blend of technical precision and intuitive expression. He is the recipient of several awards, including a prize for printmaking, and has been featured in prestigious events such as the Printmaking Month in Paris and the Peter-Stuyvesant Foundation prize.

Claude's works are defined by a limited color palette – black, grey, brown, and blue tones – and techniques such as layering, dripping, erasure, and scratching. With high horizons and plunging perspectives, his compositions balance abstract and figurative dimensions, offering immersive, contemplative scenes. Each painting is created without preliminary drawing, guided instead by instinct and gesture.

Alex Claude exhibits in prestigious venues both in France and internationally, notably at the Salon de la Jeune Peinture, YIA-Paris, as well as the Musée Jean-Léon Gérôme in Vesoul and the Pascale Cottard-Olsson Gallery in Stockholm. His works are featured in numerous public and private collections, including those of the Bibliothèque nationale de France (National Library of France), the museums of Belfort and Vesoul, and the Artplu Contemporary Art Museum in Shanghai.

An exacting artist, Claude explores a poetic vision of landscape, crafting powerful visual compositions that unite silence, depth, and light. His pictorial universe invites viewers into a sensory experience, where paint becomes language.
