Description
Acrylic asserts itself here with a dense and instinctive material. The subject, curled upon itself, seems absorbed in a solitary reading. A bright yellow coat cuts through the deep darkness of the background. This chromatic opposition guides the eye towards the center of the composition.
The brushwork is free, almost raw. The face, treated with an economy of means, suggests a silent introspection. The curved posture and legs drawn against the body reinforce the impression of isolation. The artist plays with contrasts to translate a nocturnal and muted atmosphere.
The figurative style slightly fades in favor of an expressive approach. Touches of blue and white bring a cold light to the open book. This piece, made in 2025, explores urban solitude through a play of superimposed textures. The surrounding black envelops the scene, isolating the character in their own mental space.
Presentation
Sitelle's self-taught pictorial practice flourishes through a rich and fertile artistic approach. It combines visual sensitivity – via photographic practice, in particular – and the knowledge and fluidity of the performed body through theatre, dance theatre, stage direction, and reading aloud. Haunted by words, stories, and their staging, the artist's pictorial works emerge as wonderful cinematographic shots – close-ups, from which a suggested and enigmatic off-screen space emanates. The narration that colours all of Sitelle's work might also be that which we internalise, that which we tell ourselves. This internalising of story, the thrall of words, and the exploration they lead to, have long taken symbolically and emotionally charged abstract forms in the artist's paintings. Gradually, with incontestable maturity, they crystallise into human figures rooted within increasingly familiar landscapes.
