Description
Encounter is an oil painting by Jean-Luc Almond that continues his exploration of fragmented identity and psychological portraiture. Working on a gesso-primed wooden panel, the artist builds and erases the figure through layered applications of paint, scraping, and textured abrasion.
The result is a partially formed, haunting presence that seems to emerge from and dissolve into the surface. Rather than depicting a fixed subject, Almond creates a shifting visual space where memory, emotion, and material gesture intersect.
The work reflects his broader interest in instability, perception, and the tension between visibility and disappearance within contemporary figurative painting.
Presentation
Jean-Luc Almond's artistry is characterized by highly textured oil paintings that possess a tangible, sculptural quality. Embracing the transformative nature of artistic expression, Jean-Luc diverges from conventional subject matter constraints, focusing instead on the materiality and texture of the paint itself. This approach creates a palpable tension within his thick surfaces, where paint transcends mere representation, revealing deeper psychological and emotional layers.
In his Dark Head series, Jean-Luc expertly plays with light and darkness to evoke enigmatic subjects that emerge from, or disappear into, the shadows. Through bold impasto marks, scratching, and peeling, he meticulously constructs portraits, only to mask, erase, and blur features, leaving behind traces of their history—a haunting reminder of what lies beneath.
Inspired by Victorian photography, death masks, and black and white film, Jean-Luc's work channels the timeless and haunting qualities of these historic sources. These influences manifest as pixelated references reinvented in his paintings, capturing ephemeral moments of beautiful chaos. Polarities coexist in tension within his creations, reflecting the duality of human experience—fractured, disjointed, yet deeply layered.
Discover the captivating world of Jean-Luc Almond's art, where representation and abstraction converge, inviting viewers to delve deeper into the complexities of existence.
