Zakhar Shevchuk’s Temptation (Seated woman with one bare breast) (2019) is an expressive canvas that captures the tension between tradition and rebellion. The work began as a life study, following the academic conventions of nude portraiture. A model sits with a provocatively open shirt, her pose hinting at vulnerability and confidence at once. Yet Shevchuk resists simply recording what he sees. He turns the exercise into a statement: naturalistic flesh tones dissolve into exaggerated, almost toxic color, while heavy black strokes dominate the composition in open defiance of academic “rules.”

The facial features are simplified, nearly blurred into anonymity, shifting the focus from identity to atmosphere. The mood is restless, charged, and unafraid of dissonance. Shevchuk has explained that this series of works, created right after his graduation from the academy of arts, reflected his protest against orthodoxy. He consciously broke rules – using pure black, distorting hues, rejecting faithful likeness – in order to search for a more personal visual language.
