Description
This abstract composition plays on a radical contrast of textures and colors.
The eye is immediately captured by the geometric division of the space.
On the left, a band of pure white brings a serene and flat luminosity.
This calm opposes the density of the black block which occupies the majority of the plane.
The artist uses the knife here to work the material in thickness.
The black does not remain flat. It fragments into horizontal streaks and rugged reliefs.
These grooves create a play of shadows and reflections changing according to the viewing angle.
A red rectangle comes to break this chromatic duality.
Its presence brings visual tension and a punctual warmth to the center of the image.
The oil is applied generously to allow the physical trace of the gesture to appear.
The light seems thus imprisoned in the superimposed layers of paint.
The whole rests on a precise balance between structural rigor and tactile spontaneity.
The work is distinguished by the opposition between the fluidity of the white and the roughness of the black.

Alain Bécanne is a painter, born in Toulouse in 1957.
Alain got interested in painting only in his forties. Initially he was interested by figurative painting, and realized his first exhibitions quite quickly.
Finally in 2002, Alain changed gears and turned towards abstraction, a lyrical abstraction mainly inspired by great names of movement. This change has an influence on his manner of painting and technique.
Alain's work around abstraction quickly turned towards the question of light and its reflections. Whether the canvas is monochrome, black or white, the artist is always able to create light. He likes to work on shades, reflections that each color has to offer.
Light is an important part of Alain's paintings, he doesn't stick to only one way of processing but considers it to be an effect, a way to highlight his subject.
Material is a key aspect in Becanne's work, the painter likes to work with layers and thickness, each of his movements is visible, the paint on his canvas portrays image of his trace.
