Remembering Pure Rhythms, 2021

Alec Cumming

This vibrant and bold artwork immediately grabs the viewer with the vibrancy and energy of its colours. Dominated by bright red hues, the work juxtaposes geometric and organic elements in a dynamic and cohesive manner. Bands of yellow contrast sharply against the red background, creating a visual tension that captivates and intrigues. The shapes appear to float and overlap, reminiscent of a cubist composition modernised through an expressive use of colour. Recurring patterns of lines and dots add a visual rhythm that guides the eye across the canvas. The variety of textures adds depth, with each brushstroke and application of paint seeming to tell part of a larger story. Figurative elements such as cylinders and objects reminiscent of architectural fragments mingle with more abstract figures. This fusion of recognisable and abstract forms creates a dialogue between the familiar and the unfamiliar, stimulating the viewer’s curiosity. The audacity also lies in the harmony of contrasts: each color and shape seem to have been chosen and placed with a precise intention, contributing to a composition that is both chaotic and masterfully orchestrated. In short, this work is a statement of dynamism and modernity, rich in symbolism and emotion, which leaves a lasting impression through its complexity and beauty.
