  • About the artwork

    Artwork sold in perfect condition

In this work, Leah Sampson represents the sacred site of Pirlinyarnu, located 165 km west of Yuendumu, to which is linked the Dream (Jukurrpa) of Water (Ngapa).
Legend has it that in the Dreamtime - the mythical time of creation for the Aborigines, two rain-making ancestors of the Jangala family called for the rain with their songs and thus unleashed a huge thunderstorm. It mingled with another thunderstorm and moved along different clan territories. He was subsequently seized by a brown falcon ancestor (kirrkarlanji) who let him fall on Pirlinyarnu where a very large swamp (maluri) was formed. This swamp still exists today and when it rains, hundreds of ducks (ngapangarla) gather there.
Like most artists from the Central Desert, Leah Sampson uses "dot painting", or pointillism, which is inspired by floor paintings traditionally made during ritual ceremonies.
