Description
Bunny (2011) is a pencil and gouache drawing on paper by Inga Makarova, measuring 84 x 60 cm. At first glance, the female figure appears quiet and delicate, her body sketched in fine graphite lines. Yet her posture is intentionally exaggerated, her hands caught in claw-like shapes that complicate the sense of calm.
The most striking details are the shoulder tattoo—a skull set against a red flower – and the speech bubble above her head that insists: “What? I am a good girl!”. Borrowing the graphic vocabulary of comics, Makarova creates tension between image and text, humor and menace. The statement feels ironic, as if mocking the stereotype of the submissive “good girl.”
Through this combination of pop references and precise draftsmanship, Makarova transforms a simple portrait into a commentary on gender roles, social expectations, and the contradictions of identity.
Presentation
“To create something meaningful, something real, you should truly love what you do, as well as the way you do it, and always be passionate about it. For me art will never turn into a boring routine, as I truly enjoy transferring my thoughts and ideas into artworks." Inga Makarova
Inga Makarova is an award-winning Ukrainian painter, sculptor and draftsman. With a background in fashion and graphic design, she translates both worlds into her mixed media compositions. Inga is constantly experimenting with new themes, concepts, images, new combination of colours and forms. Lately, in addition to various sources of light (like neon or LED that are used directly in her artworks), she also started experimenting with various objects that are often quite far from art, for example sport jackets, tableware, cutlery, and even cigarette butts. Inga Makarova's desire to innovate, rather than imitate, allows her to turn even the most ordinary themes into something new, unique, and fresh, once it got reflected in her artworks.
