Description
In Your NAR-KITTY, Inga Makarova uses humor and visual wordplay to question cultural stereotypes around masculinity and aggression. This mixed media painting – a fusion of oil and enamel on canvas, topped with a sculpted and painted green tracksuit jacket – references the post-Soviet subculture often associated with gopniks and delinquent youth. But instead of glorifying or condemning, Makarova inserts a warm, subversive twist.
Inside the jacket, she paints a fluffy orange cat with piercing eyes, directly confronting the viewer. The Cyrillic phrase “ТВОЙ НАРКОТИК” hovers above – translating to “your narcotic,” but with “котик” (kitty) nested within the word. The result is both biting and endearing, using linguistic humor to soften the perceived harshness of the subculture she evokes.
Makarova’s work speaks to a broader truth: under every hardened exterior may lie a hidden softness or yearning. This ironic gesture invites the viewer to reconsider assumptions, and perhaps find empathy in the most unexpected places.
Presentation
“To create something meaningful, something real, you should truly love what you do, as well as the way you do it, and always be passionate about it. For me art will never turn into a boring routine, as I truly enjoy transferring my thoughts and ideas into artworks." Inga Makarova
Inga Makarova is an award-winning Ukrainian painter, sculptor and draftsman. With a background in fashion and graphic design, she translates both worlds into her mixed media compositions. Inga is constantly experimenting with new themes, concepts, images, new combination of colours and forms. Lately, in addition to various sources of light (like neon or LED that are used directly in her artworks), she also started experimenting with various objects that are often quite far from art, for example sport jackets, tableware, cutlery, and even cigarette butts. Inga Makarova's desire to innovate, rather than imitate, allows her to turn even the most ordinary themes into something new, unique, and fresh, once it got reflected in her artworks.
