Origin: Japan

Japan along with Korea is probably one of the most homogeneous countries today. It's easy to feel one with the crowd, or completely alienated from it depending on your mindset. Especially in the morning rush hour - if you ever take a trip to Japan I recommend you to sit at Blue Bottle Cafe at Shinagawa Station in the morning - the view of the crowd below is unbelievable!!

I started this painting a few days before the tragedy in Seoul and felt some strange resemblance to it while painting it. I think it's equally as comforting as it is frightening to be a part of a crowd. Do you like crowds or prefer to avoid them?

Adam Norgaard (b. 1991) is an American artist working in Japan for the past 6 years. His paintings are influenced by the sensation of culture shock and outcast that he experienced when he first lived abroad. He attempts to bring the viewers into a similar feeling of foreignness by the atmosphere of some of his paintings.

Adam introduces notes of chaos into the beauty of the painting - such as unexpected hues of color that accent specific features. In his own practice he is working at deviating from references and attempting to work completely from his imagination.
