Mountains at Sunset, 2020

Zakhar Shevchuk

Mountains at Sunset is a semi-abstract contemporary oil painting in which Zakhar Shevchuk transforms landscape into a dynamic field of color and texture. Rather than depicting a precise geographical location, the artist constructs an atmosphere through layered impasto and chromatic contrast.

The composition is structured horizontally. In the upper section, mountains emerge from dense strokes of grey, muted blue, and deep crimson, suggesting a sky heavy with motion. Below, the foreground shimmers with turquoise, pale pink, ochre, and mineral tones, creating the impression of reflective water or terrain without definitive boundaries. The thick application of oil paint generates a tactile, almost sculptural surface.

The sunset is not rendered through traditional warm gradients. Instead, color fragments and intersects, producing tension between cool and warm tonalities. The painting becomes an exploration of how landscape can be translated into emotional abstraction while preserving spatial depth.

Created in 2020, this work belongs to a later series of small semi-abstract landscapes in which Shevchuk moves decisively toward painterly autonomy. For collectors seeking contemporary abstract landscape art rich in texture, atmospheric intensity, and expressive material presence, Mountains at Sunset offers a compelling and modern interpretation of nature.
