Description
Portrait of a Young Man is a refined figurative oil painting created in 2013 during Zakhar Shevchuk’s early independent period. Rooted in strong academic training, the work demonstrates the artist’s technical command while already revealing his movement toward psychological depth and expressive surface treatment.
The sitter is shown in three-quarter view, wearing a straw hat and traditional vest over a light shirt. The composition is balanced and classical, yet the visible brushwork adds vitality and immediacy. Earthy ochres, warm browns, and muted greys dominate the palette, creating a cohesive tonal harmony.
The portrait does not aim for theatrical drama. Instead, it captures quiet introspection. The subject’s gaze is directed away from the viewer, suggesting contemplation and inner life rather than social display. This psychological subtlety distinguishes the work from purely academic portraiture.
As part of Shevchuk’s independent figurative development, this painting represents an important stage in his artistic evolution – where structure, discipline, and emotional restraint converge. For collectors seeking contemporary figurative portrait painting with classical grounding and psychological nuance, this piece offers lasting value and refined presence.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
