Description
Radiance is a compelling contemporary still life painting created in 2019. At first glance, the work appears minimal: a black vase placed on a small table before a reflective surface. However, closer observation reveals the true subject of the painting – light itself.
The entire composition is structured around the reflection of sunlight from the mirror behind the vase. Brilliant yellow and golden tones burst outward from the dark center, transforming the still life into a dynamic exploration of illumination and contrast. The black vase functions as an anchor, intensifying the effect of the radiant light.
The surrounding space is built from layered greys and cool mineral hues, allowing the luminous center to dominate. Fine incised lines and textured oil applications introduce tension and movement across the surface. The work balances figurative structure with semi-abstract light treatment, making it both contemplative and visually powerful.
Radiance reflects Shevchuk’s interest in perception, reflection, and the transformation of ordinary objects into carriers of emotional and symbolic energy. For collectors seeking contemporary still life art that combines classical composition with expressive abstraction and luminous intensity, this painting offers a refined yet striking presence.
Presentation
“I try to simplify the form to the point when it feels that nothing else shall be removed and only the essential elements remain. I transfer my impressions and self-reflections about objects into my paintings. I express what I feel rather than how I see, often arriving somewhere between figurative and abstract art." Zakhar Shevchuk
Zakhar Shevchuk is a young professional painter and draftsman, he holds a master in arts degree from the National Academy of Fine Arts and Architecture (Kyiv, Ukraine) and now himself teaches at the academy. His artworks are held in public and private collections worldwide, furthermore, he often participates in various public projects, such as painting murals and other monumental installations.
With years Zakhar's artistic style moved away from academic realism (which always tended closer to expressionism) and towards the style that in somewhere on the edge between figurative art and abstraction. In many of his works, even those that may seem as fully abstract ones, you will find some elements that were intentionally added, aiming to trick your brain into believing that you have finally found something recognisable, something that matches the reality, but then you suddenly loose it, starting the search over and over again.
