Night Lights, 2019

Zakhar Shevchuk

Night Lights is a powerful contemporary landscape painting exploring the interplay between artificial light and natural environment. The work captures a park at night, where street lamps cast elongated vertical beams that reflect off trees, bushes, and surrounding foliage.

The vertical lines of the lamp posts structure the composition, acting as architectural elements within the organic flow of painterly forms. Light fractures across leaves and branches, dissolving the boundaries between abstraction and representation. Rather than depicting a literal park scene, Shevchuk paints the sensation of night – the shimmer, diffusion, and instability of perception under artificial illumination.

The lower part of the canvas glows with deep blue, turquoise, and muted greens, suggesting dense vegetation. Above, cooler greys and smoky tones create spatial depth. Expressive brushstrokes and layered oil textures enhance the atmospheric vibration of the scene.

Painted in 2019, Night Lights reflects the artist’s exploration of light as transformative force. Artificial urban light redefines nature, altering color, shadow, and form. For collectors of contemporary landscape painting, semi-abstract cityscapes, and expressive oil art focused on nocturnal mood, this work offers both emotional resonance and strong interior presence.
