Description
Pencil on Cotton paper. Image size: 39 H in. x 48 in. W. Sheet size: 43 H in. x 59 in. W. Unframed.
This artwork captures a moment of dynamic tension through its expressive use of charcoal. The focus on a seated figure, whose hands press firmly onto their thighs, conveys a sense of inward contemplation and restraint. The bold, sweeping lines emphasize the muscular tension and texture of the clothing, creating a vivid interplay of light and shadow. The artist's skillful manipulation of contrast and perspective invites the viewer to explore the depth of emotion etched in every stroke. The stark monochrome palette enhances the dramatic intensity and draws attention to the intricate detailing of the figure’s form. By abstracting the background, the piece isolates the subject, amplifying their vulnerability and strength. This composition is not merely a depiction but an exploration of the human condition, combining physicality with psychological insight. Its compelling energy and masterful execution make it a striking and memorable work.
Presentation
Celso Castro is a reference in Colombian Caribbean plastic arts who has drawn, painted, sculpted and photographed penises for more than four decades.
In his works, Castro exalts the male genitalia, putting into tension the limits imposed by the sex/gender system that are part of an unquestioned patriarchal and phallocentric order. Most men
The ones he portrays are inhabitants of the Colombian coast, also constructing alternative ways of conceiving Latin American identity.
By breaking taboos on corporality and male sexuality, his work has been censored on many occasions due to public accusations of immorality and pornography.
