Description
A painting of a locally popular pub in the old, 19th Century area of the town of Stockport in Northern England. The pub, which is reputedly haunted, is well known for its heritage interior and having the smallest gents toilet in the Western hemisphere! This area is the oldest part of Stockport Town centre with many cobbled passageways, narrow streets and winding steps up to a Victorian market Square and I tried to capture some of that alluring yet strange historic atmosphere that can pervade that area in this painting in an otherworldy, almost cartoonish way. It is painted in acrylic paint and some ink on 50x40cm board, varnished and it is presently in a black wooden frame approx 7.5cm wide, but can be removed from that and sold independently if requested. This would reduce the shipping cost by half.
Presentation
I mostly paint unique, bizarre, sensually vibrant urban landscapes or cityscapes usually of the North of England. These cityscapes eclectically pool diverse influences and involve spontaneous, often instinctive forms of distortion expressed via colour, proportion, perspective, innate harmonious relationships and an incongruous juxtaposition of styles. Sometimes, I am specifically trying to convey existentially disorientating feelings through these techniques and sometimes other types of emotion and general sensual vibrancy. I try to walk a delicate balnce between planning what I do and allowing a painting to have a organic life of its own. My paintings have been used promotionally by the University of Lancaster, the University of Manchester, in pop videos, on book jackets, in magazines, and made into postcards by the Manchester Tourist Office. They are exhibited regularly and are in private collections around the world.
