Sentinelles, 2024

Marion Cicéron

This painting presents an arrangement of standing stones, placed with an evident intention to capture the raw and immutable essence of nature. The irregular shapes of these rocks, dominating the space of the canvas, reveal a silent and imposing strength. The artist uses an earthy color palette, skillfully blending tones of brown, ochre, and green, accented by subtle touches of blue and red. This chromatic combination gives the stones an organic and almost ethereal quality. The delicate nuances of shadows and light on the rocky surfaces are rendered with remarkable precision, emphasizing the textures and natural imperfections of the materials. The absence of a clear environmental context—just a neutral background—allows the viewer to focus entirely on the shapes and colors of the stones. This minimalist staging accentuates the monumental presence of these elements and gives them an aura of mystery and gravity. Upon closer examination, one can appreciate the artist's technical mastery in the interplay of volumes and perspectives. The well-balanced composition guides the viewer's gaze smoothly across the different stones, encouraging prolonged contemplation of each detail and texture. This painting is a sober yet powerful celebration of natural elements, inviting the viewer to explore the timeless beauty of stones, which, though solid and static, possess a rich and complex inner life. This work is a tribute to the mineral world, evoking both tranquility and power, while prompting deep reflection on permanence and transformation.
