Description
Late 20th century mixed media sculptural assemblage by British artist Derek Carruthers. The work is not signed but was acquired along with a collection of the artist's work directly from his atelier.
A lively, fun, colourful and energetic assemblage including a fantastical bird flying over a great pyramid. The houses below are so small whilst a golden sun glitters in the sky faced with a clock. Two stylised dark figures stand tall in front of the large pyramid. References to Egypt and its great civilisation are strong in this sculptural work. The artist may be making a comment on the rise and fall of civilisations with the passing of time. Time overshadows us all and makes us small in the end.
Carruthers had a background in architectural design and this shows in the construction of this work. The artist enjoyed investigating how spaces relate to eachother often playing with proportions of some elements of his work.
