Description
Contemporary surrealist watercolour and gouache on paper by British artist Derek Carruthers. Signed bottom right.
An intriguing and beautifully painted surrealist work of a figure either entering or leaving a cave, staring up at the bright full moon or white sun.
Carruthers loves to pose questions to the viewer. Is this a view of a figure emerging from a cave into the sunlight, lauding man's evolutionary progress? Or is the figure returning to the cave, turning their back on a seemingly perfect world. In the white moonlike circle a faint sketch of a lay figure looks out over the scene. Is this a reference to 'big brother' watching over us or a hint at people losing their identities/humanity as the world becomes more and more advanced?
