Description

“Muxe” – Juan Ibarra

In , Juan Ibarra shapes a deeply personal vision of identity and resistance through a work rooted in the aesthetic and ethical legacy of Mexican muralism. True to the spirit of Diego Rivera—his greatest influence—Ibarra does not conceive painting as a mere object of contemplation, but as a vehicle for storytelling, memory, and cultural affirmation. Though he speaks through abstraction, his work retains the social, symbolic, and humanist breath that defines the muralist tradition.

The central figure, barely outlined among earthy and rocky textures, bears a dove atop their head—a symbol of peace and redemption that, in this context, takes on spiritual and political significance. It is not a literal image, but a presence that emerges from the material background as though carved from the stone of time itself. Ibarra constructs the image through dense layers of mixed media, giving the surface of the canvas a nearly tectonic quality, where the pictorial gesture evokes both the hand of the muralist and the archaeologist uncovering the ancestral.

The character, inspired by the figure of the —a non-binary identity within the Zapotec culture of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec—embodies duality as a form of ancestral wisdom. Rather than confining the figure, Ibarra liberates it, inscribing it within a powerful zone of ambiguity: between masculine and feminine, between the earthly and the divine. This ambiguity is not weakness, but a form of strength—a cultural resistance against normative impositions.

Rivera’s influence is felt not only in the ethical dimension of the work but also in its visual construction: in the gravity of the figure, in the symbolic weight of each element, in the way the individual becomes collective. is not merely an image; it is a statement, a presence that challenges and speaks to us from the depths of the earth and of history.

With this piece, Juan Ibarra reaffirms a vision of art as commitment—where abstraction is not escape, but a contemporary means of continuing the legacy of the great muralists: transforming matter into symbol, and symbol into living force.

Presentation

The burning sensation conveyed by Juan Ibarra's proposal is comparable to the feeling of seeing cuts and openings in flesh. It is no coincidence that the painter inherits techniques such as frottage and grattage, which give his canvases an aged appearance. In fact, his work is adjacent to the European tradition that encompasses informalism and abstract expressionism. In this way, the artist aims to highlight the worn-out character of painting, as well as the range of textures and reliefs that literally detach from the canvas.

Somehow, his pieces speak of the pictorial disintegration that not only exhausts itself but also gives rise to an exposed process of material healing. Therefore, his creations represent matter in a raw state of cauterization and transformation. This aesthetic of decay is crucial to him as it exacerbates the fragmented nature of the materials he uses to paint. This is because he deliberately resolves his compositions and, to a certain extent, anticipates the ravages of time in the realm of plastic arts.

Hence, his art decomposes color, forms, and spaces, along with their multiple interrelations. It is worth mentioning that the artist works in layers, much like sediments of rock formations, to then intercalate and blend the background with the surface and vice versa on a single plane. Furthermore, his works frequently feature geometric and expressionistic linear structures that enhance the visual effect of corrosion while carrying an immeasurable dramatic charge.
