"Battle" – Battle of Austerlitz, Triptych (Central Part) by Daniil Litvinov is an explosive, theatrical panorama of one of history's most famous military clashes — Napoleon's decisive victory at Austerlitz in 1805. This central piece of the triptych captures the violent crescendo of war, brimming with chaos, movement, and layered symbolism. At the heart of the composition stands a bold French officer atop a rearing white horse, hoisting a richly embroidered standard proclaiming allegiance to the Emperor. Surrounding him, soldiers fall, stab, shoot, and clash in a tightly packed inferno of bodies and horses. The entire canvas seems to swirl — flags wave, sabers slash, and faces contort with rage, fear, or delirium. Above them, ghostly blue-gray cavalry figures — possibly angelic or symbolic spirits of war — ride through the skies, echoing classical depictions of divine judgment or historical fate. What the artist expresses: Litvinov's battle is not a glorified victory march but a baroque vision of military spectacle and horror. With grotesque facial expressions, exaggerated poses, and interwoven bodies, he transforms history into a living tapestry of madness and heroism, showing the absurd theatricality of war. The emphasis on banners, uniforms, and horses nods to pageantry, but the tangle of limbs and weapons undermines any clean narrative of glory. Ultimately, this central panel is a visual explosion of ambition, bloodshed, and imperial myth, reflecting both the grandeur and grotesquery of Napoleonic warfare. It stands as a brutal ballet — an operatic midpoint in Litvinov's sweeping triptych of empire, collapse, and human folly.
