Alexander the First – Battle of Austerlitz (Triptych – Left Side), 2024

Daniil Litvinov

Litv 1174

"Alexander the First – Battle of Austerlitz (Triptych – Left Side)" by Daniil Litvinov is a dynamic and richly detailed historical fantasia capturing the theatricality and paradox of one of the most iconic battles of the Napoleonic era. This segment of the triptych focuses on Tsar Alexander I, gloriously posed on a white steed at the center of a chaotic and stylized prelude to war. The scene is brimming with motion and exaggerated expressions: Russian officers in ornate uniforms, soldiers standing at attention, a drummer boy beating out the march, and a dog barking anxiously at the frontlines. Litvinov paints each character with a touch of caricature, blending realism with grotesque exaggeration — especially evident in the almost comically noble face of Alexander and the expressive horses. An eagle flies above, symbolizing imperial ambition and looming destiny. What the artist expresses: Litvinov offers not a dry historical rendering but a satirical epic, exposing the vanity, pomp, and tragic absurdity of war. By exaggerating facial features, costumes, and poses, he draws attention to the performative nature of military power and the fragile egos that often steer history. At the same time, the sheer visual richness suggests admiration for the pageantry and spirit of the era.In essence, this painting is a baroque critique of imperial glory — blending admiration, irony, and theatrical storytelling to portray a moment where pride meets fate on the eve of catastrophe.
